Describe what you were doing at time of sighting
I was riding my snowmobile on the trails that my Dad had made. I was only 11 years old at the time. Inwas in the woods behind my house. Where I grew up was mostly woods and fields. The closest neighbornto us was approximately 1 1/2 miles away. My Dad had taken me hunting and taught me the sounds ofnanimals. We had bear, bobcat, deer, elk, etc. all thru the woods, and he wanted me to learn what soundsnbelonged to what animal. I was about 2 miles away from our house on a trail, and decided that I wantednto try jumps. I went over a jump and landed in some fresh powder and stalled the snowmobile out. Intried to get it started and it wouldn't crank, so I had to do what my Dad taught me. I had to take out thenspark plugs to make sure that they were not wet or flooded. I soon discovered they were wet and I hadnflooded the machine a little.
Describe what you heard / found / saw
While I was trying to get things in order, I heard this strange noise. It was a low growl to start and itnsounded far off. As it got closer the growl turned to a kind of high pitched shriek. I was scared to say thenleast. This was not a bear or a bobcat. I had never heard this sound before. I was trying and trying to getnthe snowmobile to crank and I was not paying attention to what was going on around me until I heard anvery loud crack of a tree. I stood up and looked over my right shoulder and I saw this birch tree movingnback and forth. It was no more than 500 feet away. There was no wind what so ever. I finally got thensnowmobile cranked, turned around and started to leave. I looked over my shoulder again and the treenwas still moving violently
Describe the time of year and the environment
It was early afternoon and to the best of my recollection, it was a partly cloudy day. No precipitation, nonfog

Not that I remember.
Additional comments
When I go home, I told my dad what happend. He wanted to go then to see the area, but I refused. Wendid go the next day. Me, dad, my brother, and my grandfather. The birch tree was snapped 1/2 way upnand laying on the ground. It was a decent size tree. Not a little sappling. There were tracks going in allndirections, but you really could not make out what type of tracks they were because they werenoverlapping and it looked like a chaotic scene. I never ever went snowmobiling in that area again, and Inalways had someone with me when ever I went outside. Whether it was the yard or the woods.
