While this is not a novel directly featuring the creature itself, Sasquatch Summer is as accurate as possible regarding many pertinent issues related to the ongoing search. Should one specimen be harvested in order to preserve the species? What is the potential impact on wilderness preservation policies if the creature’s existence is proven?

The novel takes a few gentle jabs at some of the fringe elements of the Sasquatch community, while conversely, one character is based very loosely on the late, great Grover Krantz.

A quick preview:

When Curt Gotch slinks back to his remote mountain hometown—after failing to make much of himself in the “real world”—he plans to peacefully fritter away his days on the old family ranch, rationing his inheritance, growing a little weed, and operating the small local newspaper to fend off boredom.
Then the strange footprints start showing up in the hills around Sovereign. Although he assumes the prints are a hoax, Curt seizes the opportunity to increase his newspaper’s circulation.

But when he accidentally takes several photographs of what appears to be an upright fur-covered creature scavenging at the local dump, he finds his life spun sideways, and the small town of Sovereign is turned inside-out by the crush of tourists, tabloid journalists, and armed-to-the-teeth sasquatch hunters who descend in droves.

The arrival of one of the world’s richest women, media mogul Moira DuPree, and her ten-million dollar live-sasquatch bounty, only serves to fuel the escalating insanity.

Soon Curt finds himself blamed him for the mania that overwhelms the small town, while his antagonism with the county sheriff—an old high-school rival—spirals toward a violent confrontation. And worse, his sort-of relationship with his almost-girlfriend, Celia, is rapidly unraveling.

When he learns that Moira DuPree’s interest in the sasquatch sightings has little to do with science or philanthropy, he enlists of a quirky band of allies—his lawyer, Lester Turning Weasel, his cantankerous hard-drinking uncle, Pink Holtzhauser, and the controversial anthropologist, Homer Stern—to orchestrate the ultimate hoax and thwart Moira’s ambitions.

With more twists and switchbacks than a high-mountain dirt road, Sasquatch Summer has been described as rowdy, tender, a witty page-turner, and a heck of a lot of fun.

Although the final analysis of the creatures' sounds was presented in a symposium at the University of British Columbia in 1978 very little work has taken place to date. It is the hope of Sierra Sounds that another study can be launched using newer technology.

We believe that these recordings are unique and suggest an insight into the nature of these elusive unidentified primates. The years that we've experienced intermittent encounters have suggested to us that these entities are more that just another animal in the woods. It is the belief of Sierra Sounds that the creatures should not be shot–but a trust relationship should be encouraged.

When traveling the Trinity Highway stop in for a visit to our local Museum located in Willow Creek , just an hour from the coast of Arcata on Hwy 299. The Willow Creek - China Flat Museum was started by a few folks, in 1988, interested in preserving history pertaining to the eastern part of Humboldt County and the western portion of Trinity County. We have many very interesting “things from the past ” your children will love to see, from “the good old days” we tell them about, or they’ve read in school. You’ll enjoy the ‘trip down memory lane’ yourself. And if you don’t know about these times, come and see what it was like way back before you were born.
